Luminosity
This is a work in progress. Starting with a large canvas tacked to the wall, I built a base of gestural marks and drippings with walnut ink and then came in with a bright layer of thin acrylic paint. While the paint was still wet, I went back in with walnut ink, and the drips made really interesting patterns in the acrylic. in some areas, a total disintegration of the form. I discovered that clear water created additional layers of interruption if dropped from the top of the canvas, so I went over the whole piece.
The next layer is intended to block out section with a putty color and then a dark umber to draw in architecture and and an outward motion. Compositionally, my pieces have been centered, which makes them less dynamic, but strong-willed.
While drying, I have brought a detail onto the computer to work with digital layering, color shift, and to see what happens. What associations can I make between this work, and the collage pieces? Are they of a similar vein?
Is digital painting a valid form of expression, and to what end? Do I have a desire to bring the art into photoshop because it is a tool I use everyday, or because it has potential to adjust or improve the painting in a way that I can’t on canvas and with paint? I don’t have many colors in real life, but I have an unlimited palette on the computer.
This painting doesn’t exist in real life. It needs to be printed, or projected through light. I’m thinking about the luminosity of stained glass and video, whether light is projected through, or reflected from.
