Abstraction with light
I’m taking a great workshop online with Meredith Rosier through the Woodstock School of Art. It’s an hour of week of looking at artists and watching a demo along with a weekly assignment for review. So happy to be able to take classes virtually, without an hour drive upstate or a two-hour train ride to the city. While my previous time commuting was a quiet time to work on ideas, or drawings, I’m happy for the opportunity to learn from new teachers when I clock out of my office work at 5.
These works in progress are about building up layers of transparency and opacity as a way of disrupt the surface. Very similar to the goals of using the Venetian painting technique.
I am constantly struggling not to judge the marks I put down too much. Making art is a call and response, but sometimes pressure comes from too much judgement about what’s good and what’s not. Abstract work communicates abstract ideas, and I’m stuck in a literal world. This is a real challenge.
